I am a sociology major from Calgary, Alberta specalizing in crime. Currently I am writing an honours thesis on sexual assault and reporting rates. Sociology of Crime is a passion of mine and the only thing I like to do more then read about it is write about it!
I am also a victim of multiple sexual assaults and frankly I am pissed off about it. I used to blame myself for what happened to me, and when it happened a second time I spent years wondering what I could have done different, and why it had happened to me, again. Then about 2 years ago I decided to start doing something about victim blaming, sexual assault, and started getting more involved in the community to do my part in putting an end to this. In the last two years I have been involved in many projects and have taken on a large advocacy role in the last few years. And I hope to do even more projects in the future.
I am not new to the blogging world and did have a previous blog on sexual assault had some good articles on it that I will upload slowly. I will post once a week for sure so I hope you come back and check out the new posts on the weekends.
I’ve also already gotten a couple questions about the name of my blog. So I thought I would just explain the panopticon for anyone who might be interested. The Panopticon is a type of prison that was designed as a way for prison guards to keep an eye on inmates without the inmates being able to tell who was being watched at any given time. The structure itself is circular with a main lookout station in the center. The circular design allows a guard to watch these inmates but the inmates never know if they are being watched.
Later academics such as Michael Foucault argued that the panopticon was not just a part of the prison system but also was a part of the greater institution and in the present day the panopticon has come out in the form of surveillance such as CCTV in public spaces. I am a sociology nerd and love studying crime I wanted to some how incoproate my love of sociology and criminology into my blog and came up with “Panoptic Society”. I thought it was fitting given the subject matter .
